SARA DRIVER
March 1994
I hadn’t heard of Sara before this shoot. I’d been briefed that she was director of When Pigs Fly, a film starring Alfred Molina and Marianne Faithful that was opening in Tokyo, and that she was also the long time partner of New York auteur Jim Jarmusch. In person she was easy, relaxed and fun. I was taken by her watch, which was a rather large man’s watch. She said she’d been in Moscow recently and had bought it from a street market.
When the shoot was over I mentioned to my friend Andrew, who was assisting me for the day, that she was really down-to-earth - talking about her day to day life, going out to lunch, to parties. He replied, yes, just that all the people she hangs out with are famous.
As co-writer and producer of Stranger Than Paradise and with Broken Flowers having been inspired by her idea it’s fair to say Sara has been a good part of Jim’s success over the years.
